Barbary pirates (also known as Barbary corsairs) were maritime raiders and privateers who operated from the Barbary Coast of North Africa between the 16th and early 19th centuries 🌊. Their bases were primarily located in the cities of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli, which formally acknowledged the authority of the Ottoman Empire but enjoyed a high degree of autonomy 🏰. The corsairs attacked European merchant and passenger ships in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, capturing crews and trav
