The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first GLP-1 pill for weight loss and maintenance.

Packaged food makers and fast-food restaurants may be forced to overhaul more of their products next year as newly approved, appetite-suppressing GLP-1 pills become available in January, analysts say.

In the company’s latest phase 3 clinical trial, the highest dose of the pill resulted in a 16.6 percent weight loss at 64 weeks compared to 2.7 percent on placebo.
