'Stand by Me' Cast Recalls How Rob Reiner Planned Tribute to River Phoenix Before His Own Death
For the 'Stand by Me' Reunion tour, the cast reveals how Rob Reiner came up with the idea of how to honor late actor River Phoenix.
Told through flashback, Reiner’s film, which is based on Stephen King’s short story “The Body,” follows four friends — Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern Tessio (Jerry O’Connell) — who look for a lost dead body on Labor Day weekend 1959.

Seeing Jerry O’Connell in that shirt and pants really does bring back a lot of memories. He also apparently brought the comb and the cherry Pez as well, which was a nice touch. Those are references that will mean little if you’re not familiar with Stand by Me, but will mean everything to those who know it well.

"Stand By Me" was about male friendship. At some point, that became problematic. Now it's obviously necessary.
