Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Jerry Greenfield is leaving the ice cream brand after 47 years, saying the freedom the company used to have to speak up on social issues has been stifled by corporate parent Unilever.
“I can no longer, in good conscience, and after 47 years, remain an employee of Ben & Jerry’s,” Greenfield said in a letter posted on the website for the Free Ben & Jerry’s campaign. “Ben & Jerry’s has been silenced, sidelined for fear of upsetting those in power.”
The Vermont company, founded in 1978 by Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen in Burlington, is known for activism. Under “Issues We Care About,” on the ice cream maker’s website, you can find subjects like racial justice, climate change, democracy and refugee rights.
