HTML 4.01 Strict is the way to go. XHTML 1 conformance is a meaningless goal given that the benefits it brings to the table are useless in real-world web browser scenarios.
I currently have an XHTML page which contains a fair amount of inline SVG - http://zond.stupidpupil.co.uk/touchmon/ (N.B. WebKit only*) - and I'd like to migrate those SVGs into external files.
