Geneva — Around 40 people died and more than 100 were injured in a bar fire in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during New Year's celebrations, police said on Thursday, as the country struggled to grasp the scale of the tragedy.
Swiss officials say it appears the fire was triggered by sparklers in Champagne bottles that got too close to the ceiling.
A fire of "undetermined origin" broke out at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana at about 1:40 a.m. local time, the Cantonal Police of Valais said in a statement.
